Creating a nursery for a new arrival is one of the most fun and rewarding home improvement projects you can embark on. Not too sure where to start? Here are few tips to help.
Style / Theme
It is not completely necessary to limit yourself to one single style or theme, staying around a specific idea though will help you to create a cohesive design.
Textiles
Selecting your textiles after your paint colour is not a great idea. You probably already have your heart set on your perfect curtains and bedding. There is an almost endless selection of paint colours, so it is certainly easier to select textiles first then select paint to match accordingly.
Focal Point
The focal point of a nursery is usually around the cot, but there are many other opportunities to do things differently. Perhaps you have a beautiful oversized window, a beautiful piece of artwork or chest of drawers.
Ceiling
Remember your baby will not be upright for awhile and will spend considerable time on his/her back. Give them something to look at. Murals and decals are a great way of achieving this.
Feeding Chair
Those early weeks and months can be tricky. Make life as easy as possible. Whether you are breast feeding or bottle feeding you need to make sure the process is as smooth as possible and stress free. Be sure everything you may need is well within reach.
Dirty Clothes / Nappies
New little humans can create a huge mess! The availability of sanitation supplies ready to go is a must. Be sure to set up a tray at your changing table with antibacterial gel, wipes and whatever else you decide to use to keep your new little bundle of joy clean after messy situations arise. Also give consideration around where your dirty clothes and nappies will go when you are up to your armpits in “fun”. Again, make life as easy as possible and have everything you need well within reach.
Windows and Lighting
Where possible install blockout curtains or heavy blinds. This will aid your baby’s sleep and prevent the room from getting too hot. Likewise with lighting, installing a dimmer where you can control the strength of the light is a great option. Nightlights are also a great option for late night feeding.
Room to Grow
When selecting nursery furniture try to think long term. Whilst a tiny bassinet may look ever so cute now, ensure you leave enough room for an exchange to a toddler bed later. Not enough room for both a stand alone dresser and change table? Consider furniture that allows you to do both.
Safety
Don’t wait to make the nursery safe. Before you know it your little bundle of joy will be on the move. Ensure electrical points are covered and cords are tucked away. Furniture that may pose a threat should also be anchored down. Get down on your hands and knees and look at the room from a toddlers viewpoint and be aware of potential choking hazards.
Don’t Wait
Be sure to get your nursery project underway early to ensure you allow plenty of time to air the room from the smell of paint and new furniture. Getting underway early allows you to make final touches at your leisure.
Thinking ahead will ensure you get the most out of your money and your space. Renovating a nursery is certainly a memory to cherish.
