What to consider when engaging your Tradesmen.
1. Licence
For example, when looking for your Plumber and Tiler to assist in your renovation it is important that they hold the appropriate licences.
Plumbers and Tilers in each State of Australia are regulated, e.g. in Queensland by the Queensland Building and Construction Committee (QBCC) and they must hold a QBCC licence with the correct licence class.
Ask your Plumber and Tiler to provide you with their QBCC number and confirm their details by using the licence check link on the QBCC website. This link will detail the licences held and if there are any limitations placed on the licence holder.
2. Experience
Some Plumbers and Tilers specialise in certain types of work, ask what experience your they have in the area that you are looking for? How long have they been in business. When was the last time that the Plumber and Tiler performed the work that you are requesting?
When it comes to bathrooms, few tradesmen can match a Plumber when it comes to knowledge and experience. And a Plumber with years of experience will know the locations of your pipes after a quick examination of your bathroom. As such, they’ll work faster and complete your renovation project on time with less mistakes, less stress and not cut corners.
A bathroom with a faulty plumbing system isn’t the relaxing place that it should be. If your drains have always been sluggish or your toilet is prone to backing up, these issues should be addressed whilst you are renovating.
Unless you have a Plumber at your disposal, identifying problem areas will be difficult and costly in the long term if not addressed properly.
Only a Plumber can examine the pipes in your bathroom and work out if they need to be replaced or repaired. Only a Plumber can carry out those jobs safely.
3. Recommendations/Testimonials
Check reviews on Facebook and Google to see what feedback has been provided by previous customers, when reviewing the information consider the responses provided by the Tradesmen to those reviews.
4.Insurance
Every Tradesman should have Public Liability Insurance, when engaging your Plumber and Tiler ask them if they have insurance, if you are concerned you could ask to see a certificate of currency for their insurance.
If you are having certain works completed that are above the value of $3,300, the QBCC may require that a home warranty insurance policy is taken out by the contractor.
5.Warranty on Labour and Products
It is important to understand the warranty period that your plumber provides. The warranty on products will vary depending on the products being used.
Speak with your Tradesman about the products and if there are alternative products that would provide longer warranties, whilst these products may be more expensive the warranty period may outweigh the initial outlay.
Sourcing parts such as tap ware from the local hardware may be cheaper, but they won’t necessarily be better or come with a warranty.
Your qualified Tradesman knows all the best parts from reputable manufacturers who will guarantee their products. Your Tradesman can advise you on what to install in your bathroom to get the best out of it in the future.
