We have all been there. Sure we can select the furniture and décor items and make it look like it all works – then sadly it doesn’t. So how can you be sure that your selections not only coordinate well, but also are practical in your every day living space?
Firstly start with a focal point in your room. For example, the living room, select the fireplace, coffee table or TV.
Size of space
The size of furniture and décor selections have a significant impact. Consider each object in the room and how they relate to the size of the room. There needs to be balance between the pieces. Two or three oversized lounges with an oversized coffee table will surely make the room feel overcrowded.
Offset the size of your selections with shapes. For example if your furniture items are rounded you can offset them with a square or rectangular rug and side tables.
Texture
Playing with a variety of textures is great fun. Look at the big picture. The finish of your lounge will influence your selection of coffee table and feature rugs.
A variety of textures maintain the balance of a room. If every element of the living room is the same the area will feel over bearing. Some restraint is also required though, a room full of textures can feel suffocating.
Seating
Every seating option should have a nearby table for drinks, snacks, phones and laptops. The height of the tables should also be sysync with the furniture it sits alongside. All seating options should also touch the rug, even if it is only slightly.
Creating visual flow in a room is all about balance. Be sure to “play” with your ideas before you make those purchases to ensure your eye is not constantly drawn to a corner with a dark piece of furniture.
There are many things to consider when coordinating your furniture and décor items, playing with your ideas will lead to a successful layout and practical use of the area.
